Residential Treatment for Sexually Abusive Adolescent Males
Newport News Behavioral Health Center offers programming for adolescent male sexual offenders and sexual abusers, ages 11-17, in need of intensive sex offender-specific treatment.
Males are served on two separate units. One unit houses 11-13 year olds; the other unit houses 14-17 year olds. Our goal is to provide a supportive and secure environment of positive peer culture where individuals can accept full responsibility for their offending behavior, recognize their strengths and to develop appropriate social and coping skills. A close examination of cognitive distortions which contributed to their offending behavior is emphasized as well as establishing an internal focus of control. Residents will establish a safety network of individuals that are committed to helping the individual remain free from sexually re-offending.
The mission of Project Valor is to provide quality treatment specific to sex offending behaviors and sexually abusive behaviors. By re-educating young men to respect and value themselves and others, the cycle of violence can be interrupted. The mission is consistent with the nationally recognized goal of all sexually abusive behavior treatment, ‘no more victims.’
Project Valor is a treatment program designed around the core belief that adolescents deserve treatment for their sexually abusive behaviors in a strength-based environment. We believe that treatment can be maximized through individualized treatment planning that encompasses the adolescent’s specific developmental issues, method of learning, and individual strengths. Treatment is provided in a non-shaming, non-judgmental environment. Staff encourages residents to gain insight and take full responsibility for their sexually offending behavior. The program is cognitive-behaviorally based and employs a multidisciplinary approach to ensure that treatment is individualized, innovative and collaborative. The services provided include:
- Sexually Abusive Specific Group Therapy
- Individual and Group Therapies
- Licensed and Accredited Educational Services
- Psychosexual Evaluation

We believe that within a positive peer culture, adolescent males can develop self-worth, significance, dignity and responsibility. We examine the youth’s presenting problem as well as other behavioral issues, psychiatric issues and educational needs in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan. Each youth is surrounded by a community of caring professionals as they work towards healthy sexuality and appropriate social behavior.
The program is directed by a Master’s level and Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider (CSOTP). Licensed and/or license eligible master’s level therapists (CSOTP or under the supervision of a CSOTP) work with residents on these two units.
