Avtar Dhillon, M.D., D.F.A.P.A., F.A.S.A.M.

drdhillonphoto_webDr. Dhillon has served as the Medical Director at the Newport News Behavioral Health Center since 2003. He is Board-certified in Psychiatry, Addiction, Forensic Psychiatry, Pain Management and Psychosomatic Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also Board-certified in Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry and Board Certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Dhillon has served as the President of the Peninsula Psychiatric Society. He is a Fellow of American Society of Addiction Medicine and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.



Michael Murphy, M.D.

Dr.Murphy2015PhotoDr. Murphy is Board-certified in General Psychiatry, as well as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, FL, and completed both his residencies in General Psychiatry and Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, VA. Dr. Murphy specializes in the treatment of children with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and pervasive developmental disorders. Dr. Murphy formally served as Chief of Behavioral Health Services at Ft. Eustis in Virginia where his roles included being the supervisor of psychiatrists, as well as clinical consultant to the Army Substance Abuse Program and Family Advocacy Program.


Alan H. Ali, M.D., F.A.P.A.

Dr. Alan Ali_webDr. Ali has served as a full-time Attending Psychiatrist at Newport News Behavioral Health Center since 2006. Dr. Ali is Board-certified in Adolescent Psychiatry, and in General Psychiatry by the American Boards of Psychiatry & Neurology. Dr. Ali has published several articles in the American Journal of Psychiatry about Borderline Personality in Adolescents, and in the Jefferson Journal about Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Dr. Ali has given presentations to the staff on issues relating to Adolescents’ mental health and treatments.



John G. Phocas, III, M.D.

Dr. PhocasDr. Phocas is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He received his medical degree from George Washington University, Washington, DC. He completed his psychiatry training at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Phocas has served as the inpatient medical director and vice chairman of psychiatry for Shore Health Services, and worked as a psychiatrist for Dorchester County Public Schools’ Mental Health Services program. He previously worked at Atlantic Psychiatric Services, Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center, and the Pines at Kempsville. Dr. Phocas is a full-time attending psychiatrist for the Inpatient Acute Care facility at Newport News BHC.
