Newport News Behavioral Health Center provides quality mental health treatment for males and females, ages 11-18, in a safe and secure, therapeutic environment.

Admissions

The Admissions Department at Newport News Behavioral Health Center is staffed by caring, competent professionals who will provide assistance in placing your adolescent. The office is staffed Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Admission Criteria for NNBHC Residential Treatment Programs (to include Assessment, Substance Abuse, Trauma):

  • Male and female adolescents
  • Age range on admission: 11 to 18
  • Full Scale IQ score of 60 or greater
  • Individual is not acutely suicidal or homicidal
  • Needs a secure setting to evaluate or address behavioral, social, emotional, and psychological needs
  • Individual has been unsuccessful at lesser levels of care

Admission Criteria for NNBHC Juvenile Sexual Offender/Sexual Abusive Program (Project Valor):

  • Male adolescents
  • Age range on admission: 11-17
  • Full Scale IQ Score of 70 or greater
  • Individual is not acutely suicidal or homicidal
  • Needs a secure setting to evaluate or address behavioral, sexual offender, social, emotional, and  psychological needs
  • Individual has been unsuccessful at lesser levels of care

In order to make appropriate decision regarding admission into our program, our team requests current clinical information.

Clinical Documentation to include (as available):

  • Recent Psychiatric Evaluation
  • Current Psychological Evaluation with Full Scale IQ
  • Psychosocial History/Social History
  • Current IEP with minutes and School Transcripts
  • Progress Notes and Discharge Summaries from past placements
  • Medical information to include any medical concerns and vaccination history
  • Psycho-Sexual Evaluation if referring to the Juvenile Sex Offender Program
  • Legal history and involvement

Exclusionary Criteria for Project Valor (Sexually Offending/Abusive Males):

  • Actively Suicidal or Homicidal Requiring Acute Hospitalization
  • Alcohol/Drug Addiction Requiring Medical Detox
  • Individual is unable to participate in treatment planning or to respond to therapeutic interventions
  • Individual is presently addicted to substances and currently requires detoxification or medical care.
  • Sexually aggressive behavior/sexually-abusive youth that have been identified as requiring a higher level of care through a psycho-sexual risk assessment.
  • Significant Medical Concerns.
  • Danger to Self or Others due to Acute Psychosis.
  • Felony Charged or Adjudicated w/ Felony Assault.
  • Individual is severely disorganized and/or psychotic so as to render the person a danger to self or others and requires acute hospitalization.
  • Sexually reactive behaviors/sexually reactive youth have not been identified as an abuser through a psycho-sexual risk assessment.
  • Individual has medical problems that would require acute or skilled nursing/medical care.
  • Individual has had a serious incident of cutting, requiring outside medical attention within the past 60 days.

Exclusionary Criteria for General Residential Treatment Programs (Including Assessment, Substance Abuse, Trauma):

  • IQ Below 60
  • Significant Medical Concerns
  • Actively Suicidal or Homicidal Requiring Acute Hospitalization
  • Alcohol/Drug Addiction Requiring Medical Detox
  • Individual is unable to participate in treatment planning or to respond to therapeutic interventions
  • Felony Charge or Adjudicated with Felony Assault in less than one year (exception Project Valor)
  • Sexual Predatory Behavior
  • Adjudicated Sexual Offender
  • Danger to Self or Others Due to Acute Psychosis
  • Individual is severely disorganized and/or psychotic so as to render the person a danger to self or others and requires acute hospitalization
  • Individual has had a serious incident of cutting, requiring outside medical attention within the past 60 days
